Informatics is the interdisciplinary study and use of information in healthcare; it is more than data collection, analytics and information transfer. How we interface with others can greatly influence human information behavior and affect the ultimate success of our efforts. High cognitive load with difficult interactions reduces our effectiveness on the job and impedes reception of our information. Stress contributes to career burnout. This session will focus on behavioral science concepts to inform workplace practices that enable the promotion of wellness while addressing cognitive overload, stress management and civility among collaborating colleagues and partners. We’ll discuss healthy behaviors when interfacing with others, promote workplace civility as well as mindfulness practices that improve our own wellness to better serve our clients and keep ourselves healthy to increase our resilience in stressful situations. Presented by Edward C. Klatt, MD, Professor of Pathology, Mercer University School of Medicine.

Learning objectives:

  1. Define information behavior, civility, wellness, mindfulness, and resilience.
  2. Describe human cognitive processing in relation to information load and stressors.
  3. Discuss methods for promoting civility and reducing incivility in the workplace.
  4. Practice methods that increase resilience to stressful situations.
  5. Develop strategies to improve wellness in the workplace.
