Data is the foundation of decisions. The computerization of healthcare is maturing to the point where “getting data” is no longer the challenge. Now, we need to “use data” to deliver the right care, to the right people, at the right time. Old paradigms based on manual processes hinder progress in the digital age. Can we use data to transform and disrupt healthcare in a constructive way?

Learning Objective(s)

  1. Appreciate how biases influence our assessment of data
  2. Understand the role of data in care delivery and quality improvement
  3. Recognize where automation can be used to increase efficiency
  4. Know the pros and cons of re-engineering versus iteration

Speaker:

Curtis Kennedy, MD, PhD
Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Critical Care Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine, at Texas Children’s Hospital

Demands on healthcare providers are constantly increasing. Patient “care” is being invaded by “rules” that providers must follow in order to optimize reimbursement or institutional ranking. Attention is a limited resource, shared between “care” and “rules.” Dr. Kennedy’s passion is to increase opportunities for caring by simplifying the complex and automating the mundane.
