Luz Ross Memorial
On November 27, 2015, the HIMSS community lost an advocate when Luz passed away after a long battle with ovarian cancer. She became involved with patient engagement in healthcare when her husband experienced a medical error. She brought her passion for life to health IT about a decade ago, and helped us in any way she could. Read the blog post dedicated to Luz from Tom Leary, Vice President, Government Relations.

HIMSS Staffing News

Dear Chapter Leaders,

I am writing this letter to notify you that I have been promoted to the position director, clinical informatics with HIMSS beginning Dec. 21. In my new role as director, clinical informatics, I will oversee all clinical informatics initiatives, collaborations, goals, strategies, resources, research, strategic relationships and related membership activities with HIMSS.

I want you to know that I am truly leaving with mixed feelings: happy about my new role with HIMSS, but sad to be leaving the chapter program. It has been an immense pleasure to work with the chapters and leadership for the past five years. Your volunteer leadership, time and experience are a huge part of the advancement of HIMSS mission and vision and it has been my honor to work with you all.

I am fully confident that you will continue to receive the best support from HIMSS. I will continue to support the chapters and Operations team during the transitory period. As for your future questions regarding the chapter program, please contact Jordan Blinn for direction.

I would like to thank you for allowing me the chance to work with you in this capacity. It has been a truly rewarding experience working with you and I look forward to continuing to work with you in my new position.

Best Regards,
Tammy Kwiatkoski

Important Notes

Chapter Website/POC Call update
On Nov. 3, HIMSS Operations hosted a webinar with the chapter point of contact, as well as other interested board members to provide updates and answers related to the chapter websites.

Key Items:

  1. Drupal is a content management system (CMS) which will be replacing Results Direct. HIMSS was satisfied with Results Directs' ability to provide an immediate solution; however, phase 2 approach will be with Drupal CMS.
  2. Review chapter website photos and consider changing them to fit the profile and images the chapter would like to become associated with.
  3. Ensure all events are updated, as this is the most visited page for all websites.
  4. Sponsorships are vital to the chapter. Consider however the depth of real estate given to sponsor logos on the home page in order to ensure branding immediately is recognized as HIMSS chapter first.

A recording of the webinar is available here. Please contact Tammy Kwiatkoski with chapter website questions.

Informational Return – Due to IRS
All chapters were to file their annual informational return with the IRS by Nov. 15. All tax-exempt organizations whose gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less are required to electronically submit Form 990-N, unless choosing to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ. All chapters must have submitted the appropriate filing to the IRS by Nov. 15 or risk losing tax-exempt status. Listen to the Chapter Leader Webinar titled, “Chapter Financials & Taxes” to learn more about how and what each chapter should file. Please contact Chapter Staff with questions.
