May 2016 Austin HIMSS Newsletter

Message from the President

Hello chapter members,

Last week was filled with events for Austin HIMSS Chapter members.  Last Tuesday we heard from David Smith who is the President of Social Care and his topic was "The future of work".   His summary and predictions of what the workforce and particularly the US healthcare workforce will look like in the coming generation was shocking.  Example: Currently the fastest growing segment of the workforce are in the late baby boomer generation and the smallest are recent college graduates.  The employment dynamics of the previous 30 years will look nothing like the next 30 years.   I’d like to invite you to view his presentation that will be posted on our chapter website this week.

The second event last week was the Texas HIMSS regional conference in Houston.  Approximately 700 healthcare IT professionals attended the event.  Aside from the fantastic group of speakers from local and national organizations, there was plenty of time for networking in between events.   I believe that connecting with peers in the industry is just as important as the knowledge gained in the educations sessions and vendor discussions.   I'm already looking forward to next year's regional event which will be held in San Antonio.

Lastly, the 2016-17 Austin HIMSS Board elections will take place this week.   We were able to find some great Austin Board volunteers at the regional event who are excited to join the board next year.  Look for the voting email to arrive in your email in the coming week.

All the best,

-Doug Burkott, FHIMSS

President, Austin HIMSS Chapter
