Nebraska HIMSS Fall Meeting - Polarity Thinking This meeting was kicked off with a great presentation from Laurie Levknecht, Transformation Education Manager at ELSEVIER, on Polarity Thinking (interdependent pairs of values or points of view).

This presentation discussed the differences between problem solving (either/or thinking) and Polarity thinking (both/and thinking) leading into a major current organizational Polarity of “stability (continuity)” and “change”.

She emphasized a very important healthcare polarity of framework driven change and project driven change that will drive organizations to gain a competitive advantage in the future. For practice, she suggested developing a quick polarity map when you think an issue might involve a polarity (below is a general example of a Polarity map). This will help to innovate and create without losing stability/continuity and help your organization gain a competitive advantage within the marketplace.

Nebraska HIMSS Fall Meeting - Clinical Informatics Track As part of the Informatics track, Deepak Khazanchi, Ph.D. gave an excellent review of UNO’s College of Information Science and Technology. Both undergraduate and graduate student have a wide variety of options for students to pursue degrees that focus on Health Information Technology. For undergraduates, students can choose between degrees in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Information Assurance, and IT Innovation. Graduate students then have the opportunity for more advanced specializations focused on medical/health informatics, public health informatics, and bioinformatics. UNO also offers a PhD program in Biomedical Informatics.

Dr. Khazanchi also reviewed some of the great work that is being accomplished in the field of Health Information Technology. His department has covered a wide range of categories including current challenges to barriers to EMR adoption and bioinformatics and data mining. Emerging technologies such as mobile computing/technology, home monitoring and patient wellness applications are also areas that have received considerable focus. Overall, UNO is fostering an innovative and dynamic culture within the College of Information Science and Technology with regards to Health Information Technology. The outcomes of which will not only benefit healthcare within our state but also contribute to the rest of the healthcare industry.
