UHIMSS November Newsletter

 

 President’s Message - Julie Beard

We are making great progress as an organization. You will notice that the Advocacy Committee received the highest honor from HIMSS with the President’s Award as a result of their efforts.

As your Board, we now have representation from our major healthcare providers across the state: U of U, IHC, HCA, IASIS, VA, Central Utah Clinic as well as physician representation, professors from U of U, and U of MD, UHIN, and industry. We currently have two remaining Board positions open. Please contact me if you are interested in serving on the UHIMSS Board. I would also encourage you to become involved in one of the committees as an opportunity to increase your network and help our community.
 
I have enjoyed getting to meet some of you at our recent events. We appreciate your feedback and are excited to hear the positive comments. It is wonderful to see the increase in attendance and networking. Our events are being broadcast live for remote members and recorded and posted on our website for members unable to attend. We are striving to help our members make a difference in healthcare. HIMSS is also offering some special discounts until Nov... 30 on educational materials to members interested in CPHIMSS certification to help advance their careers. Some chapters have created groups to help in this process.

In October, I had the pleasure to attend the Leavitt Partners Health Intelligence Partners Summit with national leaders from across the country. I have highlighted some of my takeaways that may be helpful to you. We had a marvelous event on Nov. 6 with Dave Riley broadening our perspective on Big Data and Engineering for Health. I look forward to seeing you at the first ever Utah Tri-Chapter event on Nov. 20 with the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Utah Medical Group Management Association. To make it easier to scan the content of our newsletters, we are further segmenting the topics with headings. I appreciate the opportunity to serve as your President and welcome your feedback at jgbeard1@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing you in person at our event on Nov. 20.
 

Advocacy Committee HIMSS Presidents Award

Congratulations to our UHIMSS Advocacy Committee for their remarkable achievement in receiving the HIMSS Presidential Level Advocacy Award in October. In order to achieve this award they were required to meet the following challenging objectives:

• Planned and held a HIMSS State Health IT Day or State Health IT Day on Capitol Hill
• Represented at the HIMSS Annual CAR Offsite Training
• Completed 5 Chapter advocacy outreach initiatives
• Attended 9 monthly calls and completed 9 monthly tasks

New Program Co-Chair Board Member

Please extend a warm welcome to Chris Smith, CIO of Central Utah Clinic who has graciously agreed to serve on the UHIMSS Board as the Co-Chair of the Program Committee. Chris is replacing Louise Cliché who recently accepted a new job position. We have two remaining UHIMSS Board positions open. If you are interested, please contact me at jgbeard1@gmail.com.

Committee Volunteers:

Our committees are still in need of volunteers and encourage you to consider becoming more involved and have some fun getting to know some of your peers by working closely with them on one of the committees. Our goal is to have 5 committee members for each of our committees. While we have made progress, we need your engagement and support.

We have the following UHIMSS Committees for your consideration:

Advocacy, Communication, HIE, Membership, Programming, Sponsorship, Spring Conference, Student Liaison and Physician Member at Large.

In addition, we are looking to further enhance our webpage and social media communication capabilities and our looking for volunteers with expertise in Web, Twitter, Facebook and or LinkedIn as part of our Communication Committee. Nov. 6: Big Data, Personal Analytics and Engineering for Health

On Nov. 6, Dave Riley, Chief Informatics for Harris Healthcare provided a unique and insightful future on “Big Data, Personal Analytics and Engineering for Health”. He shared his personal healthcare experience, translated into research at the genomic level and resultant outcomes defining the engineering for health formula in the future. Dave provided an in depth perspective of all the factors that define the states of health, future risk and options. If you were not able to attend this event, I would encourage you to listen to the recording on the website. We appreciate Harris Healthcare Solutions sponsoring Dave Riley to travel to SLC from the east coast and speak to us.
