Call To Action

Enhancing the Skillset of the Health Information and Technology Team Using Global Standards
One of the best ways to provide a stepping-stone for those entering the health information and technology industry, or to provide a roadmap for more seasoned professionals, is to promote professional certification.  The HIMSS Certification programs focus on identification of competencies required for effective job performance. For those new to the field, certification provides a direct plan to acquiring and mastering knowledge and skills to help you get ahead.  For those with more experience, certification provides validation of the greater set of experiences you have had and sets you apart as someone committed to the field.

Every five years, HIMSS conducts research into the scope of the roles of those in health information and technology and redefines the scope of the CAHIMS and CPHIMS certification programs.  This helps confirm that the designations reflect current and relevant practices.

HIMSS needs to hear from those at ALL levels of the industry, whether they are certified or not, to identify what knowledge and skills are needed for success.  This global study helps benchmark the profession and positions HIMSS and its CAHIMS and CPHIMS programs as global leaders in professional standards.  In fact, earlier this year, HIMSS Certification Program exams became more widely available, offered on demand outside the United States.

HIMSS is conducting that research in 2017. The results will not only update the scope of the HIMSS Certification Programs, but it will provide information recommendations for professional development programming and important and emerging skill sets. If you have not yet responded to the survey, we encourage you - and all your chapter members - to do so here.

How can your chapter promote certification?  You can
1) hold an information session to educate your members;
2) host a review course for either CAHIMS or CPHIMS; and
3) recognize and celebrate those who become certified - and have stayed certified!

Some chapters offer scholarships for certification or host study groups.

On Dec. 6, the HIMSS Professional Development team will host a webinar for Chapter Leaders on career advancement options through HIMSS, including how you can help your chapter members achieve success in their careers. Register now.

HIMSS Certified Instructor Course
HIMSS would like to support you in activities to encourage professional development opportunities across your chapter, including pursuing and maintaining the Certified Associate in Health Information & Management Systems (CAHIMS) or the Certified Professional in Health Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS) certifications.

Mara Daiker, senior manager, professional development, HIMSS North America, will host a webinar on Wednesday, Dec. 13, from 10am to noon CT to educate Chapter Leaders and volunteers on executing successful programs for the certification review course.  The objectives of the program are:
  • Describe the purpose of the HIMSS certification program
  • Review the application, examination and recertification processes
  • Define the HIMSS Certified Trainer program
  • Orient trainers to the materials available to them
  • Define best practices for conducting a review course
At the conclusion of the course, attendees will receive access to all materials used during HIMSS North America-facilitated review courses (including access to all future updates of these materials).  The goal of the session is to share best practices and materials with you, so that a chapter can be successful in supporting your members in their pursuit of certification.

There is a one-time $99 fee to register for the webinar.  To register, click here.  Direct your questions on certification to certification@himss.org.
